The Two Work/Travel Programs
American Work Adventures supports two types of Work/Travel Programs:
AWA Placements and Self Placements.

What is AWA Placement?

  • If you are an AWA Placement Employer, AWA will create a personalized job offer and recruit students to fill your openings. Major benefits of this option are that AWA can help hold students to the terms of the job offer agreement they sign and can also help with replacements should hours drop permanently below full-time or other insurmountable issues arise.
  • AWA can modify the recruitment process to best suit your needs: language evaluation, employment dates, student qualifications, and can even send you resumes for review.
  • AWA will collect travel information and send you Placement Reports and Arrival Details on a weekly basis leading up to the start of the season.
  • AWA will serve as the liaison between you and your student employees leading up to and after arrival.

What is Self Placement?

  • If you are a Self Placement Employer, you have either recruited directly or been contacted directly by a Work/Travel Student who is seeking seasonal employment. All employment terms are arranged and agreed upon between the two parties.
  • This program works well for returning students, students looking for mid-season replacement employment, and second jobs. All of the above are fully allowed and supported legally by the J1 Visa.
  • Most Self Placement Students are very independent. However, their confidence in securing their own employment may cause them to seek greener pastures during their Work/Travel Program leaving you short staffed. AWA can not assist in the enforcement of dates, employment terms, etc.
  • If you are approached by a student with an AWA sponsored J1 Visa, whether for full-time employment or a second job, you should know that they are LEGAL to work in the US. However, to keep their legal status their employment records must be updated to include you as a Host Employer. Please complete the Self Placed Job Offer Form found in Forms & Resources with the student employee and fax to AWA at 415.257.2207. You will be hearing from us shortly concerning job verification.
