Travel Period PDF Print E-mail

imageAfter completing your job assignment, you are allowed to travel for a period of up to 30 days. During this travel time, you are not allowed to work. Students may only travel within the United States. If you travel outside of the United States during this time you will be denied re-entry. The last day you can be in the country is 30 days from the end date listed on your DS 2019 form and AWA Student Identification Card. Please check with your local Embassy to see if there are other return date restrictions.

Please note that your AWA Program Health Insurance is only valid during your program dates. You will need to purchase additional Health Insurance for coverage during your Travel Period. This insurance can be purchased though AVI, your AWA Work/Travel insurance provider. Link to AVI website.

If you want to travel outside of the country, you will need to contact AWA two weeks BEFORE you plan to go. Make sure you have an M on your passport for multiple entries to other countries.

You will need to mail the following to AWA:
  • Your Original, Stamped DS 2019 Form
  • A return envelope with postage on it
  • A letter explaining where you are going and your dates of travel

Do this at least 2 weeks before you travel. AWA will return the form to you signed for travel. Do not leave the country without this if you intend to return to the US. If your return date is later than the end date on your DS Form, you will not be granted re-entry. Make sure your travel planning includes research on your destination country’s laws and visa restrictions.

Since travel outside of the US must happen within your program dates, please be courteous and professional by planning ahead and scheduling your vacation time at least 2 weeks in advance with your employer. Leaving with no notice reflects poorly on you, the program and leaves your coworkers scrambling to cover for you. PLAN AHEAD!
