How to Apply for Social Security
- You must apply for a social security card to work in the US
- Find an office using your local Zip Code: www.ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1214
- Bring these documents with you to apply:
- Passport and J-1 Visa
- Job Confirmation Form with the name of your employer
- Social Security letter from AWA
- DS-2019 form
- I-94 form (stapled into your passport)
- One official picture ID
- You will need to provide the US address where Social Security can send your card. We recommend using your employer’s address on your application as your housing address is more likely to change. Be sure to tell your employer that you are doing this so they can look for it in the mail.
- After you apply, ask for receipt of application.
- It can take 4-6 weeks to get your card in the mail!
- You can get paid after applying but before receiving your card.
Please make sure you wait 10 Full Days before applying for your Social Security Card, if you apply before 10 days it may take up to 8 weeks before you receive your card and number and this can become an issue with employers! Social Security is a private, government matter and AWA cannot help you get your number faster if you make this mistake.
