Student Application Process

Below you will find the instructions to complete an AWA application for the Work/Travel Program. All documents are necessary to be submitted as a complete application. Incomplete applications will be returned and will not be processed until completed.

If after explaining the general requirements of the program in your language you feel that the applicant is qualified to accept the responsibility, it is now up to you to verify the applicant’s conversational fluency in English. This should be done through an interview and by asking some of the following questions:

  • Why do you want to travel to the United States?
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What is your favorite movie and why?
Step 1
  • Complete the online student application.
Step 2
  • Please click on the link and print the AWA University Verification Form.
  • All applications must be submitted with a copy of a valid passport and University Verification. This MUST be filled out by a University Official and MUST have a University Seal in order to be accepted to the J1 Work/Travel program. A University letter with the University letterhead and with a University Seal can also be submitted along with our University Enrollment Verification Form.
Step 3
  • Please click on the link and print the AWA Terms of Participation.
  • All applications must be submitted with the Terms of Participation. No application will be reviewed or processed without this signed document. This document must be signed and dated by each applicant. Please make sure you also keep a copy of this document for your office.
Step 4
  • Please click on the link and print the AWA Reference Form.
  • The J1 application must include one reference form. This must be filled out by an individual who has known the student and can vouch for their character. All reference information can be sent to the employer if requested and will also be used to determine the applicant’s acceptance to the program. The forms should be entirely filled out and verified by the agent before forwarding it with the application. If the person writing the reference does not speak English, please have the person write the reference in their native language. A representative of your agency should provide the translation on the back of the reference page or on an additional page.
Step 5
  • Please click on the link and print the Self Placement Job Offer Form.
  • This form is for those students who are applying as Self Placement only.

After a participant’s application has been processed and they have been placed in a job, the Overseas Partner Agency must hold an orientation for students where all participants will need to read, understand, and sign in agreement to all policies and regulations listed in the AWA Student Handbook
