imageThe Work/Travel program allows eligible students to work in the USA for a maximum of 4 months and to travel at the end of their working period for up to 30 days. Some local embassies enforce other, strict return dates. All Work/Travel participants are forbidden to work or travel outside of the legal program dates.

Extending Your Stay:
  • The Work/Travel program is only authorized to operate during designated periods that coincide with University breaks in your home country. AWA and your employer are unable to process extensions outside of the designated program dates.
  • When you were granted a Visa for the Work/Travel Program, it was because you proved your intent to return home. You made an agreement with AWA and the US Government that you would abide by the rules of this program and return to classes at the end of your program term. We expect you to honor this agreement. Should you try to change your visa status, this does not in any way involve AWA nor can we help you in this process. Illegally overstaying can lead to severe consequences, including imprisonment and deportation.
  • AWA highly recommends you do not attempt to change your visa status as this will be seen as intent to misuse your J1 Visa. You must return home on time at the end of your Work/Travel program to stay in good standing. Doing anything different than this may affect your ability to get another visa and that of your entire family for years to come.
