Entering the U.S. - Documents & Immigration PDF Print E-mail
  • Make sure that you cooperate fully with the Immigration Officer. You will need to speak clearly when answering questions about your stay in the U.S. Be respectful at all times.
  • To legally enter the U.S. as a J1 Exchange Visitor, you will need to present the following documents to the Immigration Officer:
    • DS-2019 form (issued by AWA as your legal sponsor)
    • Passport with J-1 Visa (except for Canadian students)
    • I-94 Card (stapled in your passport) – KEEP THE I-94 CARD IN YOUR PASSPORT THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE STAY!
    Travel Tips

    • These three documents allow you to enter the U.S. as well as to work legally in the United States. Carry your travel documents with you on the plane. You will not have access to any checked baggage until after you clear immigration!
    • Remember to make two extra copies of these documents and leave one copy at home with a trustworthy person and keep the other copy in your luggage, separate from the original.
    • Upon entry to the US, you will have your picture taken and your fingerprint recorded by the Immigration Officer. You are being informed of this so you will prepared for and accepting of these new airport safety regulations. These security procedures apply to anyone not holding a US passport.
